Math, Science, Teacher Initiative (MSTI) Scholarships

Description of Strategy

The number of undergraduates applying for scholarships has tripled from 2012 to 2016, which is helping to increase enrollments in the science credential program and STEM teacher candidates pursuing bilingual authorization. All MSTI scholarship recipients are required to a) meet with a credential program advisor and b) attend two STEM education events annually and submit a short electronic report about this that asks students to explain how what they observed at the event reflects either the Standards for Mathematical Practice or the Scientific and Engineering Practices. This helps them to start thinking about what it means to learn math and science in the 21st century.
